I run Scotland’s membership body for the voluntary sector – charities, community organisations and social enterprises. We lobby on behalf of the sector, provide services like payroll and IT, lead digital capacity building voluntary organisations, publish Third Force News, host The Gathering every year (the UK’s biggest voluntary sector event), run the Charity Awards and run an employment support service – Community Jobs Scotland.
I came to SCVO after 30+ years in the public sector at a national and local level, including over 8 years as chief executive of the Scottish Social Services Council. I’m interested in leadership at all levels and in all forms, especially in what leaders through hierarchy can do to support and hand power over to leaders of experience and expertise. I’m interested in how “the system” works for people, households and communities and therefore take every opportunity I can to participate in work and events to explore how we make that better. The system is made up of people – so how do we hang onto that humanity and commitment to making a better, fairer Scotland and stop ourselves getting side-tracked by process, turf wars and jostling for money or profile?
I support Project Lift as an innovative way of engaging people from lots of different spaces in rethinking how we approach health and social care as a microcosm of the wider picture.
